Situs Media Sharing = $$$ ?
Pertanyaan tentang situs2 berjenis media sharing — seperti file sharing (RapidShare, MegaUpload), image sharing (ImageShack, PhotoHost), dan video sharing (YouTube) — sudah beberapa kali terlontar. Yang paling populer adalah, menguntungkan gak sih situs2 seperti itu? Bisa menjadi tambang uang ataukah hanya demi kepuasan batin belaka layaknya tempat bermain bagi pelaku bisnis internet? Nah, jawabannya adalah mei. Meibe yes, meibe no, hehehe. Mari kita bahas.
Mempersiapkan Situs Media Sharing
Apapun jenisnya, situs media sharing membutuhkan server hosting yg reliable dan memiliki perfomance bagus. Lupakan yg gratisan karena seiring dengan makin populernya situs Anda, akses ke server hosting akan semakin berat dan kemungkinan besar situs Anda akan ditendang dari hosting gratisan tersebut.
Tiga persyaratan utama bagi server hosting yg harus dipenuhi adalah: (1) memiliki bandwidth yg berlimpah (minimal 500GB / bulan); (2) memiliki space hard disk yg berlimpah (minimal 250GB); dan (3) mampu menangani load server dalam jumlah yg besar.
Poin ketiga biasanya yg menjadi sumber masalah karena sebagian besar shared hosting, terutama yg mematok biaya kurang dari $10 per bulan, biasanya memberikan batasan yg cukup minim pada jumlah load resource yg boleh diakses oleh masing2 account hosting. Hosting sekelas Dreamhost pun agak keteteran (bahasa Indonesianya apa ya?) waktu saya gunakan sebagai rumah bagi situs image sharing saya.
Paket hosting berjenis semi-dedicated, VPS, maupun full dedicated server (DS) secara umum mampu untuk menjadi penampung bagi situs2 media sharing. Kekurangannya, selain harganya relatif mahal, butuh kemampuan untuk me-maintenance-nya (VPS dan DS). Alternatif solusinya, dari hasil pengalamannya saya, Anda bisa menggunakan shared hosting di JaguarPC. Dua situs sharing saya, ImageCows dan FileCows, masing2 memiliki account (shared) tersendiri di hosting tersebut dan hingga sekarang tidak pernah ada masalah. FileCows sendiri terpaksa saya pindahkan ke paket semi-dedicated (juga di JaguarPC) karena memang kuota hard disk yg sudah tidak mencukupi lagi (biaya bulanan semi-dedicated hampir sama dengan biaya shared hosting + upgrade space).
Yg tentunya wajib pula dimiliki adalah script atau aplikasi untuk menangani proses media sharing tersebut. Banyak software house yg menawarkan script2 sejenis ini, dari yg sederhana sampai yg (terlalu) komplit. Saya sendiri menggunakan script dari PopScript yg telah saya modifikasi untuk memberikan VAS (Value-Added Service) bagi pengguna (maaf, tidak bisa dibagikan scriptnya). Silahkan berburu ke situs2 warez untuk mendapatkannya. Ada baiknya jika Anda juga nanti membeli scriptnya secara resmi.
Untuk script ini, IMHO, usahakan untuk memasang yg sederhana dan tidak terlalu rumit. Jika punya teman yg jago programming, manfaatkan untuk menambahkan fitur ke dalam script tersebut. Sebagai contoh, ImageCows memiliki fitur resize thumbnail yg ukurannya bisa ditentukan sendiri (kebanyakan situs image sharing secara otomatis menentukan besarnya thumbnail tersebut), sedangkan situs FileCows memiliki fitur upload server-to-server (TIDAK ADA satupun layanan file sharing yg memiliki fitur ini).
Menguangkan Situs Media Sharing
Urusan monetizing mungkin kembali ke masing2 pemilik situs. Namun secara pribadi saya menyarankan agar tidak terlalu menjejali situs jenis ini dengan iklan karena amat sangat tidak nyaman. Apabila iklan2 berjenis pop-up. Saya sendiri hanya memasang satu ad unit AdSense dan satu link unit AdSense di masing2 situs dan total penghasilan kedua situs tersebut perharinya sudah berlebih untuk membiayai paket semi-dedicated hosting di server yg sama.
Mempromosikan Situs Media Sharing
Inilah kunci utama dari kepemilikan situs media sharing. Kebanyakan pemilik situs berjenis ini gagal karena mereka tidak tahu bagaimana cara mempromosikannya. Atau lebih tepat lagi, mereka *malas* untuk mempromosikannya.
Berbeda dengan situs biasa atau blog, situs bertipe layanan relatif lebih sulit untuk dipromosikan (terutama layanan yg tidak unik) karena pengguna internet biasanya sudah memiliki nama tersendiri untuk suatu jenis layanan. Contoh, jika kita ingin berbagi file, nama yg terlintas dalam benak kita pastilah RapidShare. Jika ingin berbagi video, kemana lagi kalau bukan YouTube. Brand yg sudah cukup kuat melekat ini lah yg susah untuk kita singkirkan.
Salah satu cara yg efektif adalah dengan “memaksa” pengguna internet untuk mengetahui situs kita.
Caranya, sebisa mungkin kita menggunakan situs2 tersebut untuk berbagi media dalam situs kita yg lain maupun forum dan situs2 yg lain (jangan sampai keliru dengan spam!). Yg gampang saja. Jika punya situs file sharing misalnya, rajin2lah berbagi MP3 di Kaskus (tidak disarankan karena melanggar hak cipta). Atau jika punya situs movie sharing misalnya, rajin2lah berbagi koleksi 3GP di DuniaSex (tidak disarankan karena melanggar moral, hehehe).
Cara saya sendiri mungkin sudah banyak yg tahu. Saya punya situs theme, wallpaper, freeware, manga, dll, yg semua downloadable file-nya terletak di situs file sharing dan image sharing milik saya. Selain menjadikan kedua situs tersebut populer, tambang uang saya berada di dua tempat — dari situs media sharing itu sendiri dan dari situs yg mengirimkan trafik ke situs media sharing tersebut.
Kesimpulannya, situs media sharing dapat menghasilkan uang, selama kita mau berusaha untuk menggiring Nidji trafik ke situs2 tersebut.

pengen jg sih punya situs sharing seperti itu, cuman memang saat ini kendala dari hosting. Saat ini hosting di dreamhost.
saya juga berpikir demikian, memang inspirasinya juga dari sini, tapi dilakukannya baru 2hari yang lalu, ikut2 model mas cosa, cari duit dari images hosting :). tapi yang jadi pertanyaannya, bagaimana caranya supaya ads nya bisa di targeting gitu? ada trik dan tipsnya gak mas? contohnya, foto kita tentang hotel, nah ads nya biar tentang hotel juga :)
bisa diakalin pk description. Jadi tiap user yg upload image suruh sekalian kasih deskripsi imagenya. Jadi kalo image + desc-nya tampil, (semoga) iklannya muncul juga yg sesuai. Kalo URL yg dihasilin scriptnya gak seo-friendly, jgn lupa untuk dipermak dulu pk URL rewrite via htaccess.

Beberapa waktu lalu saya punya pengalaman buruk di salah satu situs media sharing Indonesia, semua files yang saya simpan hilang. Makanya saya nyoba pindah ke Filecows.
Terangin lebih rinci soal “nitip” file di Filecows donk, Mas. Saya pernah nyoba nitip files untuk salah satu blog saya, tapi kadang link yang diberikan filecows expired.

kok aneh bisa expired? aku matiin kok limit expired-nya. Gak sepenuhnya mati sih, lom sempat edit codingnya lagi. Tapi semua link aku set supaya expired dalam 10 tahun / 1jt download. Jadi mestinya gak akan expire tuh.
Apakah ada perbedaan antara dirct upload dengan upload via url?

how about maintenance? doing balancing database,upgrading resource etc.

150 MB is huge man, still imagine clustering system in jaguarpc :-)

as for the downtime, I’ve been using this hosting for almost a year, and the only downtime I experienced was when the server being restart / maintenance.

I see, I managed over 3000+ account for student and staff in our school, provide php & mysql hosting support using http://ftp. Deploy FreeBSD box, Gigabit ethernet and manageable switch. Custom php script made for web based maintenance and clean up useless stuff in server.
System crash sometime with interruption of PLN :-) (longest uptime only 3 month). Such system like rapidshare, jaguarpc, dreamhst etc … wow. I just imagine how they work. Cabling system, power management and so on. Provide good service and friendly support. Still a lot of thing must learn :-)

btw why i like this uploader coz they already protect the file with made the file into md5 type in the hosting (so no one will leech it)
and coz the admin password locate on txt file, this some trick to protect the pass file (even already protect with md5 encryption)

save it into .httaccess and upload into your main/root , so if someone try to call text.txt they fill redirect into nohotlink.html

agree, i apllied to adsense with iix hosting, but rejected 2 times because “difficult site navigation”. It seems like the server was down when the google adsense reviewers come. So i’m not using iix anymore

yup IIX server is server located on indonesia, if we access with indonesian IP we can access site who use IIX server more fast.
